La La Lupa by David Lan
A mother, a daughter and their love hurtle towards tragedy in Verga's passionate Italian drama, first performed in 1894. The play has been translated and reworked by David Lan.
David Lan was born in Cape Town where he trained as an actor. He moved to London in 1972, and has been artistic director of the Young Vic since 2000. He won an Olivier Award for the 2004 Young Vic season. Other awards include the John Whiting award, The George Orwell award and the Zurich International TV Prize. Giovanni Verga (b. 1840, Catania, Sicily) was an Italian realist writer, best known for his depictions of life in Sicily and his strong use of dialogue. This dialogic realism would lead to his renown in such novels as I Malavoglia, and the short story Cavalleria Rusticana, which would later be adapted into a play.
