Throughout the history of landscape painting, artists have used the singular landscape subject as a common exercise to explore the multitude of light effects. Van Gogh created several scenes using one landscape subject, namely sunflowers; yet, despite the singularity of his subject, he was always successful in emoting a different sense of place. Similarly, Monet is known for his series of single image motifs in his paintings depicting haystacks and cathedrals, Cezanne for his many views of Mont Sainte-Victoire. Elizabeth Mowry is a Master Pastelist of the Pastel Society of America and a Distinguished Pastelist of the Pastel Society of the West Coast. She taught at the Woodstock School of Art in New York for 14 years and now teaches master classes in foreign countries. She is the author of The Poetic Landscape (0-8230-4067-4) and The Pastelist's Year (0-8230-3935-8), which has sold 10,000 copies.
