Landsmoder by Elena Salamanca
Landsmoder, by the Salvadoran poet, historian, and performance artist Elena Salamanca, is a searing, and sometimes grotesque, exploration of the intersections between nationalism, dogma, patriarchy, and violence. Originally read aloud from the oldest standing monument in San Salvador's centro histórico, the performance poems in Landsmoder retool the laudatory pomp of patriotic ceremony to protest the weaponization of national myth as a mask for erasure, cruelty, and neglect at the hands of the state. This unflinching collection, whose title comes from a Norwegian word that Salamanca translates as "madre de la patria" -- or "mother of the nation/homeland/fatherland"-- is a work of feminist grief, rage, and irony populated with churning wombs, bloodied flags, and ratteboned she-wolves. Salamanca, Elena: - Elena Salamanca (San Salvador, 1982) is a writer and historian. She has published Peces en la boca (Mexico, 2013 and San Salvador, 2011), Landsmoder (San Salvador, 2012) and ü¾˜–¼ltimo viernes (San Salvador, 2008). Her work has been translated into English, French, German and Swedish. In 2012, she founded, along with the artist Nadie, the Eclectic Festival of Arts FEA that brings together the work of Salvadoran and Central American artists with peculiar voices and processes. She is a Doctorate candidate in History at the Colegio de Mü¾Ž–”¼xico and her thesis investigates the relationship between Central American unionism, citizenship and exile in Mexico in the 1930s and 1940s. Her current events essays are featured in the Centroamü¾Ž–”¼rica Marü¾™†”¼a column of Plaza Pü¾˜–˜¼blica Guatemala and between 2014 and 2016 her short essays appeared in the Landsmoder blog of the Salvadoran digital newspaper El Faro.
