The Last Days of Steam Around Darlington by David Burdon
Steam locomotives disappeared from Darlington in 1966, when the loco works and shed were closed. This collection of photographs from the last decade of steam - focusing especially on the last three years - includes Darlington-based engines as well as main-line expresses and freights passing through. As steam's domination came to an end, and railway centres all over the country closed down, locos from other regions were repaired at the North Road works: this was busy right up to its last days, and David Burden was there with his camera. David's photographs, part of a collection of over 4000, are all informatively captioned. Anecdotes of his time as an apprentice at the North Road works are also included.
David Burdon, born and brought up in Darlington, is an engineer and was an apprentice fitter at Darlington Railway works in the late '50s and '60s. He is a keen amateur photographer and virtually all the images in this book are taken from his archive of 4,000 railway photos.
