In the year 1919, Eric Newby was born in London. He worked in the fashion industry and book publishing after serving in the Black Watch and the Special Boat Section during WWII, but he was always on the move, occasionally as the Observer's Travel Editor. In 1994, he was knighted, and in 2001, he received the British Guild of Travel Journalists' Lifetime Achievement Award.
