Last Wild Years by Mike Tomkies
This is the tenth and last book that recounts the author's 20 years working with Highland wildlife. The book begins with a struggle for survival in the harshest winter he has ever known. Now approaching 60, the author watches the slow destruction of his Highland paradise. In a final gesture, he devotes everything to the task of filming single-handed and throughout the seasons, the eagles, peregrines, rare black-throated divers, foxes, wildcats, badgers, pine marten and red deer that have been his nearest neighbours.
Mike Tomkies - once a Coldstream Guardsman, a journalist in Hollywood, a salmon boat deck-hand - has lived for almost a quarter of a century in remote wild places in Canada, Spain and the Scottish Highlands. His last book, A Wild Place, was commended by the Duke of Edinburgh and became a bestseller. He was made an Honorary fellow of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland in 1988.
