The League of Seven by Alan Gratz
Young Archie Dent knows there really are monsters in the world. His parents are members of the Septemberist Society, whose job it is to protect humanity from hideous giants called the Manglebom. Trapped in underground prisons for a thousand years, the giant monsters have been all but forgotten - but now they are rising again as the steam-driven America of 1875 rediscovers electricity, the lifeblood of the Mangleborn. When his parents and the rest of the Septemberists are brainwashed by one of the evil creatures, Archie must assemble a team of seven young heroes to save the world.Alan Gratz grew up in the Knoxville, Tennessee area. He attended the University of Tennessee, where he got a College Scholars degree with a focus in creative writing and then a Master's degree in English education, after a carefree yet hot childhood. Alan has taught middle schoolers catapult building, written over 6,000 radio ads, and spoken at a Czech university in addition to authoring plays, magazine articles, and a few episodes of A&E's City Confidential. Alan currently resides in the high country of western North Carolina with his wife Wendi and daughter Jo, where he enjoys reading, eating pizza, and, not surprisingly, watching baseball.
