Robert V. Remini, the nation's foremost authority on Andrew Jackson, has over the past three decades published numerous books on Jackson and his presidency, including a much-praised three-volume biography. His mastery of sources and singular diligence in advancing a revised image of Jackson are universally respected. In The Legacy of Andrew Jackson, Remini discusses Jackson's role in three areas of particular importance: democracy, Indian removal, and slavery. Remini, preeminent authority of the life and times of Andrew Jackson, was a History and Research Professor of the Humanities emeritus at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he taught and did scholarly research beginning in 1965. From 1982 to 1987 he was the Director of UIC's Institute for the Humanities. In addition to teaching at both Columbia and Fordham universities early in his career, Dr. Remini was the Southall Freeman Professor at the University of Richmond in 1992, and the W. Harold and Martha Welsh Professor of American Studies at the University of Notre Dame in 1995 and 1996.
Dr. Remini received many awards and honors in his illustrious career, including the National Book Award for his three-volume biography of Andrew Jackson in 1984. He lectured on King Andrew at the White House and for the Smithsonian Institution, and he received the George Washington Medal of Honor from the Freedom Foundation.
As well as other distinguished books on Jackson, Dr. Rimini was the author of Henry Clay, Statesman for the Union, Martin Van Buren and the Making of the Democratic Path, and Daniel Webster: The Man and His Time.
