Legs Up and Laughing by Vanessa Bates

Where do babies come from? Well, when a man loves a woman, they kiss and then...But things aren't always so straightforward, as Vanessa Bates and her loving husband found out. With nature refusing to come to the baby party, despite the deafening tick of her biological clock, she had plenty of time to think about family and what it means, exactly. In this memoir, by turns laugh-out-loud funny and beautifully moving, the author reflects on her relationship with her mother and takes us on the journey that saw her finally become a mother herself.
Vanessa Bates writes for theatre, radio and film. She is a graduate of NIDA Playwrights' Studio and has been an Affiliate Playwright with the Sydney Theatre Company and a member of their Blueprints Literary Program. In 1999/2000 she received a Keesing Studio Residency to live in Paris for 6 months. Her plays have been produced throughout Australia. She has also written several radio plays produced by ABC Radio. The radio adaptation of her play Checklist for An Armed Robber won a 2005 AWGIE (Australian Writers' Guild Award). Her blog L'Eggs Up And Laughing won a 2006 Best Of Blogs (BOB) Award (nominated by web users from around the world, voted on by a panel of judges). Vanessa lives with her husband in Sydney.
