Visions of Kin got the Melville Cane Award from the Poetry Society of America in 1978. Dear John, Dear Coltrane, while Pictures of Kin were all National Book Award contenders, and History Is Your Own Heartbeat won the Black Academy of Arts and Letters award for poetry. The National Institute of Arts and Letters, the Massachusetts Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Guggenheim Foundation have all recognized his work. He is a member of the Israel J. Kapstein has been a professor of English at Brown University since 1970.
