Lewis Hine by Mary Panzer
Lewis Hine (1874-1940) took up photography to call attention to social injustice and to campaign for change. This respect for the exploited and oppressed individual established him as an embodiment of American values. His images celebrated the dignity of working people in the modern world and gave a voice to the ordinary men, women and children who did not, or could not, speak for themselves.
Louis Menand won the Pulitzer Prize for his book, The Metaphysical Club; Mary Panzer is a photographic historian and curator; Paul Roth is senior curator and director of photography and media arts at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Bob Rubin is an independent curator; and William Shawcross is a journalist and the author of Sideshow: Kissinger, Nixon, and the Destruction of Cambodia.
