Liberty Bound by Nathaniel M Wrey
Society has turned on its head. The 'free' hide behind fortifications and the 'imprisoned' roam the wild, barren land beyond. Finbarl-apcula guards the town of Athenia, an oasis in a parched, sparsely populated world. He keeps the citizens safe, ensures those who break the draconian laws lose their freedom, and protects what he prizes above all else: civilisation. When Finbarl is made to lie to help convict a mother he once rescued from a bully, it delivers the first crack in his unquestionable faith in the system. As further lies and corruption are exposed, Finbarl's world crumbles, allowing him to finally see that 'prison walls' exist everywhere, within himself, throughout society and in the very landscape he calls home. No one is free and the civilisation he was willing to die for is at the root of the problem. Finbarl begins a thrilling adventure of twists, rebellion, danger, discovery and tragedy to break the bonds imprisoning a world, himself and the future. Will he find what he really treasures most: true freedom? In creating a dangerous but exciting 'inverse' world, where the true meaning of freedom is explored and challenged, Wrey invites the reader to consider how their own society, and the individuals within, are inhibited and restricted by 'walls' through fear and ignorance. Speculative fiction to inspire you to think again about the world of today. A book for our time.
An excellent read - as thought-provoking as you want it to beMost great books come with a twist and Liberty Bound is no exception. I admit that it's the 'twist' that really brought to my attention the connections with our own modern lives and societies and kept me thinking well after the book was closed. The narration was excellent and really brought the characters to life. However, I'll now be purchasing a Kindle copy as it deserves a place in my 'library'. Sarah Woods (Amazon - 5 Stars) A creative and thought provoking read! Excellent piece of escapism with an addictive quality. Highly recommended! Bex (Amazon - 5 Stars) I absolutely LOVED this book. The writing was fantastic and the story was gripping. I had a hard time putting it down after I had started. Alexandra (Good Reads/Amazon.com - 5 Stars) What an excellent first novel for Nathaniel M. Wrey. Wrey paints an intriguing look at a dystopian future. I love a novel that really gets you thinking. I look forward to reading more by this author. - Lisa K (Good Reads - 5 Stars) At the heart of this adventure is a philosophical question: what is true liberty? Wrey explores this question in an exciting story with an array of memorable characters. In this well-written novel, the plot is generally fast moving but I also enjoyed the slower, more descriptive passages. I would highly recommend it and look forward to the sequel. - Mary Moon (Amazon - 5 Stars) This book changed my mindset about civilization...There was nothing I disliked about this book. I enjoyed everything in the story. - TCG (Online Book Club - 4 out of 4 stars) The novel certainly brims with creativity, which stands in contrast with the rigid system that the characters live with in their lonesome city ... the story excels within Finbarl's decisions and the consequences of those choices... I could empathize with his character and that connection made the novel thrilling. - Literary Titan (4 Stars - Silver Award Winner) A brilliant thought provoking read. This book was full of twists and unexpected turns until the end. A thoroughly enjoyable read. I look forward to the next book. - Gwen (5 Stars - Amazon)
