For more than four decades, Libya has been something of an enigma to outsiders. Ruled by the despotic and unstable Muammar Gaddafi since he led a military coup in 1969, it has vast oil wealth and one of the highest standards of living in Africa. JOHN OAKES served in the RAF before becoming a teacher. He lived and worked in the Kingdom of Libya for eight years before the 1969 coup and has kept in touch with events there ever since. He is the author of Kitchener's Lost Boys and lives near Reading.
