This English translation by John Clifford was first performed at the Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh, in 1998. It is published in the Nick Hern Books Drama Classics series.

Pedro Calderón (1600–1681) was a Spanish dramatist, poet, and writer. He is recognised as one of the greatest Spanish playwrights of the golden age. John Clifford (now known as Jo Clifford) is an award-winning playwright, translator, poet and performer, who has also worked as a journalist and academic. As John Clifford, he was instrumental in establishing the reputation of the Traverse Theatre Company in the 1980s.
