The Life of Tolstoy by Aylmer Maude
Aylmer Maude was a close friend of Tolstoy, as well as his translator. His English viewpont and scrupulous fairness enabled him to take a critical view of his subject, though Tolstoy himself contributed largely to this biography, and Countess Tolstoy revised it.
Novelist, essayist, dramatist, and philosopher, Count Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) is most famous for his sprawling portraits of 19th-century Russian life, as recounted in Anna Karenina and War and Peace.
