Light by Donald Crews

This early work by William Henri Barbusse was originally published in 1919 and we are now republishing it for the modern reader. 'Light' is a novel about about a man's experiences during the horrors of World War I. Henri Barbusse was born in Asnieres-sur-Seine, France in 1873. He grew up in a small town, but left for Paris in 1889 aged sixteen. In 1914, he enlisted in the French Army and served during World War I. He saw fighting for seventeen months, until the end of 1915, when he was permanently moved into a clerical position due to bad health. Barbusse first came to fame with the his novel Le Feu (Under Fire). Published in 1916, it was based on his experiences during World War I. In 1927, Barbusse was a participant in the Congress of Friends of the Soviet Union in Moscow. He led the World Congress Against Imperialist War in Amsterdam in 1932, and headed the World Committee Against War and Fascism, founded in 1933.
