Littlenose the Hero by John Grant
This selection of stories introduces us to Littlenose, the caveboy with an irrepressible sense of adventure. We find out how he comes to meet Two-Eyes, his pet mammoth, who been languishing in the market's 'reject' department until Littlenose comes along. In other stories, Littlenose enjoys feasting at the Sun Dance, and learning how to make piercing noises (sorry, music) with a stalk of hemlock. He also finds time to discover some cave paintings while exploring (and is forced to make a hasty exit when the cave's inhabitants return). And he finds himself further away from home than anticipated after taking a trip down the river. Finally, in the title story, Littlenose saves the day by rescuing his father from a pit in the ground (just don't ask why the pit was there in the first place...).
John Grant originally invented Littlenose to entertain his children, but it went on to become a global success. He wrote and illustrated over 13 Littlenose books between 1968 and 1993. Ross Collins was born in Glasgow in 1972. In his last year at college, he won the Macmillan children's book prize. He lives in Glasgow and is now an established picture book illustrator.
