Liverpool Through the Lens by Chambre Hardman

This is a wonderful celebration of Liverpool through the ages as seen through the lens of leading British photographer Chambre Hardman. Spanning the decades from the 20s to the 70s, these atmospheric images capture the essence and spirit of this vibrant city. Hardman's subjects include the once-bustling docks; the city's two cathedrals; its streets, alleys and courtyards; the Mersey and its famous ferry and, of course, the city's proud residents - the redoubtable Liverpudlians. This book is sure to capture the imagination of anyone associated with, or interested in, this great city. Edward Fitzmaurice Chambre Hardman was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1898. Aged 18, he spent four years in India as a regular officer in the Gurkha Rifles, after which he moved to Liverpool. Interested in photography from a young age, he eventually set up a portrait studio in 1923. His real passion, however, lay in landscape photography which he pursued throughout his life alongside his commercial practice. After his death in 1988 a trust was set up to conserve his work. His house and studio at 59, Rodney Street, Liverpool is now run by the National Trust and is open to the public.
Although not a name immediately recognised by many, Chambre Hardman was perhaps one of the England's important photographers of the 20th century. Born in Ireland, Hardman moved to Liverpool in the early 1920s after serving in the Indian army where his passion for photography was discovered. He took over 200,000 photographs in his lifetime, many of the rich and famous but also stunning landscapes and also the city he loved and lived in.
