Living with Music by Ralph Ellison
Before Ralph Ellison became one of America s greatest writers, he was a musician and a student of jazz, writing widely on his favorite music for more than fifty years. Now, jazz authority Robert O Meally has collected the very best of Ellison s inspired, exuberant jazz writings in this unique anthology.Ralph Ellison (1914-1994) was born in Oklahoma and studied music at Tuskegee Institute from 1933 to 1936, during which time he made his first attempts at fiction after a trip to New York and a meeting with Richard Wright. The National Book Award was given to Invisible Man. Ellison was elected to the Academy of American Arts and Letters in 1964 and lectured at a number of colleges and universities, including Bard College, the University of Chicago, and New York University, where he was the Albert Schweitzer Professor of Humanities.
