Lloyd George by John Grigg

‘Among the few truly great political biographies of this century’ Sunday Telegraph – the first volume in John Grigg’s highly acclaimed biography of Lloyd George. The Young Lloyd George covers Lloyd George’s life from his birth in 1863 to the end of the Boer War in 1902 . It is a period of great intrinsic interest and highly relevant to Lloyd George’s future career, but comparatively little was known about it before this book appeared. Based largely on a magnificent collection of letters written by Lloyd George to his wife and others when he was a young MP, this book throws much light not only on his political activities but also on his private life and character. John Grigg re-examines many stock assumptions about the man who was one of the most dynamic and creative politicians of this century. It is a new interpretation of the man as an individual and as a major historic personality. It is indispensable reading.

John Grigg was born in 1924. He won the Gladstone Memorial Prize for history at Oxford University and went on to become a journalist, both at home and abroad. He was a columnist for the Guardian for ten years, then a political correspondent for the Spectator and a staff writer for The Times. In 1978, he won the Whitbread Award for Lloyd George: The People’s Champion 1902-1911 and the Wolfson Prize for Lloyd George: From Peace to War 1912-1916. His other books include Nancy Astor: Portrait of a Pioneer and 1943: The Victory that Never Was. Until this year he was Chairman of the London Library. He is now its President. He is married with two sons and lives in London.
