This book presents an original collection of papers based on a major research initiative into changes in the urban and regional system in the UK. It contains several years of research into seven different selected localities - inner city, new town, north, midlands and south. Each location is examined in terms of local labour market changes, industrial restructuring, local culture and civil society, local politics and local policies. As a central theme the book addresses the question of the effect of economic restructuring and the response in each area. Thus there emerges a picture of work, housing, class, change and future plans, allowing comparative analysis of different localities. It is written primarily for the student of urban and regional studies, sociology and urban geography.
Philip Cooke is Senior Lecturer in Italian, University of Strathclyde, UK. His previous publications include The Italian Resistance: an anthology (1997); Fenoglio's binoculars, Johnny's eyes: history, language and narrative technique in Fenoglio's Il partigiano Johnny (2000); and Luglio 1960: Tambroni e la repressione fallita (2000).
