Sidney Day was born in Highgate, London, in 1912. He cannot read or write, but his granddaughter, Helen Day, captivated by the stories he would tell, decided to transcribe his words and publish his memoirs. After the war he continued to work as a builder before following his daughters to the West Country to live with his wife Mary in Yeovil. He ran a newsagent's for many years and wheeled his wares around the town's hospital until retirement. He became a fixture at local car boot sales and enjoyed searching for bargains and making a bob or two. He ran a tiny second-hand shop for a while and was noted for driving an extremely hard bargain. Sidney Day now lives with his family in Dorset.
