Lorca by Gwynne Edwards

Now in paperback, a penetrating study of the life and work of an enigma in the world of theatre and poetry--awarded Choice'sOutstanding Academic Book of the Year upon first publication

Lorca's theatre, like that of Strindberg and Tennessee Williams, voices his personal dilemmas, not least his homosexuality. This study of all his plays examines the way in which the dramatist's life was transformed into high art through influences as varied as Surrealism and Greek tragedy. In an attempt to cover as many aspects of Lorca's theatre and the time in which he lived as possible, the book deals not only with the plays themselves but includes material on the social and political character of the 1920s and 1930s, on the cultural background, on Lorca's friendships with Dali and Bunuel, and on the performances of the plays in his lifetime and afterwards.

Born in West Germany in 1931, Rolf Hochhuth's provocative first drama, Der Stellvertreter. Ein christliches Trauerspiel (The Deputy, a Christian tragedy, also known as The Representative), accuses Pope Pius XII and the Roman Catholic clergy of tolerating Nazi crimes against the Jews. It received productions worldwide and caused great controversy, as well as recently being adapted for the film Amen. It was produced at the Finborough Theatre in 2006. His second play, Soldiers, initially banned in England, received its world premiere in Berlin in 1967, and received its first UK revival at the Finborough Theatre in 2004. Later works include Guerrillas, The Midwife, The Survivor and the film A Love in Germany.
Gwynne Edwards has prepared a new translation of the play, from a literal translation by Jennifer Bakst. Gwynne Edwards is a specialist in Spanish theatre and cinema and, until recently, Professor of Spanish at the University of Aberystwyth, Wales.
