Romano Guardini (1885-1968) was born in Italy but came as a small child to Germany, where he lived the rest of his life. Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (1927-2022) was a Catholic priest and professor from Bavaria who became Pope Benedict XVI. He was a student of Romano Guardini and confidant of Pope John Paul II, participated in the Second Vatican Council, and would serve as Archbishop of Munich and Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith before his election to the papacy in 2005.
