Losing Your Sight by Ellen Daniels

A practical and personal account of losing one's sight. It explains what it is really like to be blind and how the sighted can help to make their lives easier. Topics include: the eye and what blind people see - describing and illustrating distortions in vision caused by various eye conditions; communication - emphasizing the importance in the sighted world of eye-contact and body language and what happens when these communication aids are taken away; barriers - created by assumptions which often underestimate the capabilities of the visually impaired; hazards - and how best to avoid them; the value of counselling - giving an insight into problems that the blind and their carers face; registration - and names, addresses, phone numbers and websites of useful organizations.
Ellen Daniels is in a unique position to write this book. At the age of 24 she was diagnosed as having a rare eye condition. At 35 she was registered as blind; nine years later, widowed and with two dependent children, she reached a major tuming point in her life, and realised she had a gift for listening to the wants and needs of other blind people. Having first obtained an honours degree with the Open University, she trained as a career counsellor to the visually impaired and their families
