Betty DeGeneres was a working mother who had a number of occupations while her children were growing up, from employment counselor to speech pathologist. Betty was designated the national spokeswoman for the Human Rights Campaign's National Coming Out Project in 1997, following her daughter's coming out. She now travels across the country encouraging people to be honest and upfront about being LGBT, having a gay family member, and supporting gay people's equal rights. She currently resides in Los Angeles.
