James Kirby studied as an undergraduate and postgraduate at Balliol College, Oxford from 2007 to 2014. In 2010, he was awarded the Gibbs Prize for History (for the highest mark in the History Final Examinations at Oxford) and the Arnold Modern History Prize (for the best undergraduate dissertation).
His subsequent D.Phil. was jointly funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and Balliol's Peter Storey Scholarship. In 2014, he was elected to a Title A Fellowship at Trinity College, Cambridge. From 2015-17, Kirby will study to qualify as a barrister, funded by a Princess Royal Scholarship from the Inner Temple, though he remains (until 2018) a Fellow of Trinity and intends to maintain an active interest in modern British history alongside his legal studies.
