Lucy Maud Montgomery by Mary Henley Rubio

NATIONAL BESTSELLER
A GLOBE AND MAIL BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR
SHORTLISTED FOR THE B.C. NATIONAL AWARD FOR CANADIAN NON-FICTION

The writings of Lucy Maud Montgomery are so familiar and captivating that it's easy to feel we know her. But the complex woman behind the sparkling story of Anne of Green Gables experienced the dark side of life, as well as the intense joy of creativity. This beautifully written biography of one of Canada's most celebrated writers looks far beyond Montgomery's own published journals and draws on a wealth of previously undiscovered material.

Rubio's comprehensive and penetrating account of Montgomery's life, all set in rich social context and illustrated with previously unseen photographs, takes its place as the definitive biography of a literary icon.

Mary Henley Rubio is professor emerita at the University of Guelph. Her biography Lucy Maud Montgomery: The Gift of Wings (Doubleday, 2008) was nominated for British Columbia's National Award for Canadian Non-fiction and has successfully sold across the world. Rubio's other publications include co-editing with Elizabeth Hillman Waterston five volumes of The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery (Oxford University Press, 1985-2005).

Elizabeth Hillman Waterston, FRCS, O.Ont., is professor emerita at the University of Guelph. Her critical work, Magic Island: The Fictions of L.M. Montgomery (Oxford, 2008), considers all of Montgomery's novels in the context of a richly textured imaginative landscape.
