Miss Dale writes for classical scholars and others interested in metric. An ear trained to stress-rhythm can apprehend rhythms based on quantity only with the greatest difficulty. Miss Dale's achievement lies first in instructing the reader's ear to respond to a purely quantitative rhythm, then in identifying the characteristic rhythms of Greek lyric and the laws which control them - all without losing sight of the poetry. This book was first published in 1948, and Miss Dale completed her work on the 1968 second edition before her death.
