Michael Holroyd is the author of two memoirs, Basil Street Blues and Mosaic, as well as acclaimed biographies of George Bernard Shaw, Augustus John, Lytton Strachey, Ellen Terry, and Henry Irving. He is the president emeritus of the Royal Society of Literature and the only nonfiction writer to receive the David Cohen British Award for Literature. He was knighted for his contributions to writing. A Weird Eventful History, his previous work, earned the James Tait Black Memorial Award for biography in 2009. He and his literary wife Margaret Drabble live in London.
