He volunteers as a Tuesday Story Writer, assisting hospice patients in writing memoirs, letters, and poetry. Harris was honored with the Stephen H. Smith Award in 2012. Wayne State University's Tudor Award for creative writing, as well as the 2014 John Clare Poetry Prize and the 2015 Tompkins Poetry Award.
