The Macmillan Birder's Guide to European and Middle Eastern Birds by Alan Harris

Identifying "confusion" species - those birds that have strong similarities - can be remarkably difficult. The first Macmillan Field Guide to Bird Identification broke new ground by grouping together birds that are hard to tell apart and pointing out the differences. In Birding magazine it was described as "the standard for all future bird books". This eagerly awaited new guide takes the same acclaimed approach, this time helping readers identify the European and Middle Eastern species that regularly visit Britain. The clearly written text is accompanied by 80 plates of exquisite illustrations and hand-written captions. Species covered include: petrels, herons, eagles, falcons, sandplovers, Armenian gulls, larks, warblers, redpolls and buntings.

Alan Harris is the poet on the hospice hospital, unafraid to write prosy lyric lines, sing slices of life and death, and channel voices that will soon be silenced. Harris has volunteered in his community in a variety of capacities, including as an Easter Seal delegate, American Cancer Society Board member, Easter Seal Volunteer of the Year, and, most recently, as the 2016 Sparrow Health Systems Home Hospice Volunteer of the Year. He volunteers as a Tuesday Story Writer, assisting hospice patients in writing memoirs, letters, and poetry. Harris was honored with the Stephen H. Smith Award in 2012. Wayne State University's Tudor Award for creative writing, as well as the 2014 John Clare Poetry Prize and the 2015 Tompkins Poetry Award.
