Madgermanes by Birgit Weyhe
A graphic novel about the 'Madgermanes', as the Mozambican workers once contracted out to East Germany are called today. At the end of the 1970s, some 20,000 of them were sent from the People's Republic of Mozambique to the GDR to labour for their socialist sister country.

Birgit Weyhe was born in Munich in 1969. After a childhood in Uganda and Kenya she studied literature and history in Konstanz and Hamburg. Going on to study illustration, she now works as an illustrator and comic artist in Hamburg. Her graphic novels have been nominated for awards in Germany, France and Japan. Priscilla Layne was born in Evanston, IL in 1981 and grew up in Chicago. She received her PhD in German from the University of California at Berkeley, and is now Professor of German and Adjunct Associate Professor of African Diaspora Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Katy Derbyshire was born in London and has lived in Berlin for over twenty years. She is an award-winning translator of contemporary German writers, including Olga Grjasnowa, Angela Steidele and Clemens Meyer. Having taught literary translation in New York, New Delhi and Norwich, she now co-hosts a monthly translation lab and the bi-monthly Dead Ladies Show in Berlin. Katy is the publisher of the V&Q Books imprint.
