The Magician's Boy by Susan Cooper
A Boy works for a magician. He polishes the Magician's wands and catches the rabbits that are pulled out of hats. But the Boy's favourite job is operating the puppets for the Magician's famous puppet play, "Saint George and the Dragon" - until one day when the Saint George puppet is missing and the Boy is suddenly transported to the Land of the Story, on a quest to find Saint George. The Boy's journey is full of adventures with oddly familiar characters. But it's the Boy's last adventure that is the most amazing of all and changes his life for ever.
