Maid Of The Haystack by Martin J Powell

In 1776 a young, beautiful woman with graceful manners appeared in a rural Somerset village just outside Bristol and set up home in a haystack. She stayed there for four years, attracting the interest of the rich and famous. Who was she? Why did she behave so oddly? Her story sparked an 18th Century conspiracy theory touching on the most powerful people in Europe. Maid of the Haystack faithfully recounts the tale, adding another level of speculation and intrigue. The story brings 18th Century England to life and holds a mirror up to attitudes to mental health, the treatment of women and acts of charity by the rich and famous.

Martin J. Powell is a journalist and writer from Bristol, UK. He first heard about the Maid of the Haystack in the early 1980s while researching local legends for a local history magazine article. Over several decades he sought to find out more about her and attempt to solve the mystery. This book is the result of that research plus theories on what may have connected characters in her story. The author has previously written factual biographies and this is his first work merging fact with story-telling fiction.
