The Mainstream Dilemma by Stephanie Luke
With this book, Stephanie Luke provides a rigorous comparative analysis of how far-right parties shape mainstream political discourse and positions on European integration, challenging the common assumption that electoral success is the only way these parties exert influence.
By examining the UK Independence Party (UKIP), Alternative for Germany (AfD), and Freedom Party (FPÖ) in Austria, Luke introduces a new way to categorise mainstream attitudes toward the EU—ranging from enthusiastic supporters to critical sceptics. Through a detailed analysis of party documents, parliamentary debates, and interviews, she reveals that mainstream parties—particularly those on the centre-right—often adopt or "co-opt" far-right policies to manage this pressure. In doing so, she demonstrates that far-right influence is not just about winning votes; it is driven by a strategic ability to use media coverage and public opinion to force mainstream parties to react. This framework offers a clear, replicable model for understanding how the European project is being reshaped by radical-right movements across the continent.
The Mainstream Dilemma is essential reading for scholars, researchers, and students of political science, with a specific focus on European Union politics, party competition, and the rise of the far-right. It serves as a vital resource for anyone seeking to understand the shifting dynamics of modern European democracy.
