The Making of Lancaster by George Howson
Towards the end of the eighteenth century Lancaster stood on the brink of great change. During one of the most tumultuous, terrifying and important periods in British history, the city experienced rapid boom, followed by equally rapid decline. This book focuses on the unique experience of people in the city of Lancaster during the Napoleonic wars.
George Howson was born and bred in the city, where he practised as a solicitor for many years, before becoming Coroner for North Lancashire until retirement in 2002. He has a diploma in Local History and an MA in Social History from Lancaster University.
