Malcolm MacPhail's Great War by Darrell Duthie

Fall 1917. The Western Front is in stalemate.

Captain Malcolm MacPhail of the Canadian Corps has been in the trenches for longer than he cares to remember. He's just landed a new job on the intelligence staff, but if he thinks staying alive is going to become any easier, he's sorely mistaken.

The rain is pelting down, the shells are flying and the dreaded battle for Passchendaele looms. Malcolm reckons matters can still get worse. Which proves to be an accurate assessment, especially as his unruly tongue has a habit of making enemies all on its own.

The Allies are fighting desperately to swing the tide of war, and Malcolm's future hangs in the balance, so keeping his head down is simply not an option.

Darrell Duthie skilfully blends history and fiction. He brings his invented hero, Malcolm MacPhail, into conjunction with real characters, to inform and stimulate readers. Malcolm MacPhail's Great War is realistic and often gripping. deserves a Mentioned-in-Despatches at least -- DR. PETER STANLEY, professor, former principal historian of the Australian War Memorial, author

The concept of trench warfare.is a prominent theme in this very readable work of 'faction'. The friction between HQ politics and the front line resonates throughout this tale. All in all, it is an enjoyable read. - SOLDIER MAGAZINE (magazine of the British Army)

Duthie, Darrell: - Darrell Duthie lives in the Netherlands, not far from the battlefields of the First World War. He grew up throughout Canada, but spent most of his youth in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains in Calgary, Alberta where he studied Political Science & Economics, and thought briefly of joining the Navy. Instead he moved to the Netherlands to complete an MBA. After a first career as an analyst in the European equity markets he embarked upon a new one in writing historical fiction. His debut novel, Malcolm MacPhail's Great War (2017) was followed by My Hundred Days of War (2018). A War for King and Empire (2020) is the third and most recent in the Malcolm MacPhail WW1 series. Darrell's first novel, Malcolm MacPhail's Great War set in 1917-1918, introduced the world to Malcolm MacPhail, a young Canadian soldier whose penchant for plain-speaking proves almost as hazardous as the momentous battles of the Great War in which he finds himself. With Darrell's second book, My Hundred Days of War, MacPhail's story continues into the decisive final campaign of 1918. His latest novel, A War for King and Empire, takes the reader back to 1915 with MacPhail arriving on the Western Front as an inexperienced private on the eve of a major battle (chronologically this makes the book the first in the series). The books can be read as a series or stand-alone.
