Sharon White has retired after a forty-year career as a registered nurse in which she cared for and supported patients and their families. Her first encounter with death came when she was sent to the Los Angeles County General Hospital Morgue by an instructor during her first week of nursing school to do an assignment on a guy she had cared for the day before. The attendant pulled shrouded bodies, tray after tray, until the name of her patient showed on the toe tag, as she stood in front of the massive chiller. She had a moderately ill woman as a patient the next day who told her she would die at two o'clock that afternoon, and she did, exactly as foretold. These two experiences pushed her dangerously near to death, and she continued to wrestle with the subject of death throughout her career.

She spent the last ten years of her career working with families and dying patients in their homes, and she became comfortable with death and dying. She found persons who were dying to be excellent teachers and chose to keep a journal of each death. Sharon, her husband Bruce, and their dogs Ginger and Patches live in Portland, Oregon. She finds solace in the greenery of nature, where she may re-energize her spirit.
