A Maritime History of Scotland, 1650-1790 by Eric J Graham

Eric Graham traces the development of the Scottish marine and its institutions during a formative period, when state intervention and warfare at sea in the pursuit of merchantilist goals largely determined the course of events.

'Graham does an excellent job illustrating both the larger picture, presenting the reader with a sobering assessment of the Scottish fleet.. as well as reaching down to the personal level and explaining precisely what the hardships and complications were for a Scots merchant in a turbulent period of Atlantic history'
