The Marowitz Shakespeare by Charles Marowitz

Adaptations of The Merchant of Venice, MacBeth, Hamlet, The Taming of the Shrew, and Measure for Measure. Having compared an audience to a stopped clock in his introduction to this volume, Marowitz shows the reader the background to these adpatations and of the spirit in which they are made. The "clock" has neither been thrown out, nor has it been disembowelled and turned into a more reliable battery-run model.

Charles Marowitz is the artistic director of the Malibu Stage Company and co-director of the Royal Shakespeare Company Experimental Group with Peter Brook. Many West End productions under his direction include world debuts of works by Saul Bellow, Joe Orton, and Sam Shepard. His free Shakespeare adaptations have been published all around the world and compiled in The Marowitz Shakespeare. Marowitz has served as the Los Angeles Times' Drama Critic in Chief. He has been a contributor to a number of periodicals, including the Herald Examiner. He has also taught Professional Acting Seminars at Heidelberg, Stuttgart, Wiesabden, Oslo, and Stockholm, as well as colleges, universities, and drama schools around the United Kingdom.
