Martyred: Story St Lorenzo by Susan Tan
This novelized account of the life of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, a married Chinese-Filipino layman, retraces the series of events that lead up to his violent martyrdom in 17th century feudal Japan. When Lorenzo becomes a scapegoat for murder, he must escape from the Philippines to avoid arrest and possibly execution. Leaving his family behind, he joins Dominican missionaries on their ocean voyage to Japan. Little does he know that the threats he is trying to escape from are nothing in comparison to the dangers that await him. Themes include: martyrdom, persecution, and history.Susan Tan has lived many places in her life, but calls Concord, Massachusetts, home. She grew up in a mixed-race family, and, like Cilla Lee-Jenkins, had very little hair until the age of five. After studying at Williams College, she earned her PhD from the University of Cambridge, where she studied children's literature. She currently lives in Somerville, enjoys frequent trips to Chinatown to eat tzuck sang, and teaches at the University of Massachusetts, Boston.
Susan's Cilla Lee-Jenkins books include Cilla Lee-Jenkins: The Epic Story, Cilla Lee-Jenkins: The Book is a Classic, and Cilla Lee-Jenkins: Future Author Extraordinaire. Dana Wulfekotte is a children's book author, illustrator, and animator. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and lives in Queens with her boyfriend and two rabbits (whom she now regrets not naming Supernova and Sparkledust). She is the illustrator of the Cilla Lee-Jenkins books, The Remember Balloons, and her own authored Rabbit & Possum.| SKU | Unavailable |
