Mass Culture by Pete Ward

Eucharist, Holy Communion, The Lord's Supper, Mass, Breaking of Bread - different labels, each with different resonance, for the act of worship that lies at the heart of the Christian faith. While Church teaching varies as to its exact significance, and while it is celebrated with a variety of words and gestures, almost all Christians agree that it is - in one way or another - an encounter with the living God. At the same time, however, it takes place within a very human creation of music, liturgy and ritual. In the context of our late modern - or post modern - society, this book examines how these familiar cultural forms might evolve and develop. Seven chapters, each by a different contributor, examine the variety of ways in which the Eucharist can be used to challenge and inspire growing Christians, new Christians and those on the fringes of the church. There is particular stress on how it can impact people in their 20s and 30s - the UK church's "missing generation".
Pete Ward is one of the leading ecclesiologists - well-known nationally and internationally, and the founder of the ecclesiology and ethnography seminar group, which attracts hundreds of scholars all over the world. He is well known for his writings on evangelicalism and culture. Martyn Percy was from 2004-14 the Principal of Ripon College, Cuddesdon. He writes and teaches on practical and pastoral theology, and modern ecclesiology. In 2014, he was appointed Dean of Christ Church, Oxford.
