The Master Reader, The by D J Henry

The Master Reader combines solid skill instruction with a wealth of guided practice to develop the quintessential abilities students need to become master readers and critical thinkers.   The author integrates reading skills with the reading process (SQ3R) to produce more effective readers and lead students to discover the power and pleasure of reading. Providing step-by-step reading instruction, a wide range of practice and test materials (including a separate lab manual), and a rich selection of readings from textbooks and other sources, the author makes students responsible for their reading by guiding them to improve mastery of the major reading skills while teaching students to develop a system for reading.

D.J., a well-known textbook author, Henry is a community college veteran teacher with over 25 years of experience, as well as a former developmental education student. She has served on various federally sponsored initiatives meant to enrich teaching and learning with strong pedagogies and technology support during her teaching career. Working for the State of Florida as an item writer, rubric writer, and reader for the Collegiate Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) and the State Developmental Reading and Writing Exit Exam from 1982 to 2002 gave her substantial experience in standardized testing of literacy competencies. She worked as a reader for the Florida Teacher Certification Test (FTCE) for over 15 years.

Her expertise has also led her to engage with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) as a Lead Evaluator for many colleges' Quality Improvement Plans and as a co-presenter of assessment workshops at SACS' annual conferences in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Henry, a dedicated educator and colleague, has given several presentations and workshops on reading, writing, and genuine assessment at national, regional, and local conferences, as well as at individual colleges.
