Mathematics in Everyday Life by John Haigh
Through concrete examples from business, sport, games, computing, and society, this book explores the mathematics underpinning our everyday lives. The examples covered in the book include game shows, internet search engines, mortgage payments, drug testing, soccer tournaments, social inequality, voting, and much more.“This book would make for an engaging class, as the mathematics, the applications (eg., darts, roulette), and social science topics (‘which voting system would be the best?’) would generate lively discussion and allow for the mathematics to be studied rigorously and enjoyed in a fun manner.” (James Valles, MAA Reviews, April 18, 2021)
In 2005, John Haigh established the Sussex University module Mathematics in Everyday Life in response to a wish to show First Year students some of the places where their mathematical abilities and knowledge could be beneficial, as well as to give them practice applying the mathematics they were learning on other modules. This book has benefited from the input of various student cohorts. John has previously co-authored The Hidden Mathematics of Sport with Rob Eastaway and the well-received Popular Science book Taking Risks.
