Maths Investigator: MI5 Getting Started Guide by Kate Pink

Maths Investigator is a secret spy agency whose mission is to make maths fun and exciting. The series has been extensively trialled and developed to offer schools a fresh and exciting way to combine the content and structure of the 2006 Mathematics Framework with the principles of the Primary Strategy 'Excellence and Enjoyment' guidance - to raise standards whilst making learning fun. The Maths Investigator approach focuses on developing the key skills of problem solving, speaking and listening, and using and applying maths. It uses the engaging spy context and fully integrated software components to embed maths into problem solving and give pupils a clear purpose for learning. For flexibility, Teacher's Guide units are packaged in topic packs. Each pack contains three two-week units of work, including access to the associated Interactive CD unit. Alongside these, the Getting Started Guide provides background information about the rationale and philosophy behind the Maths Investigator series, in addition to quick and simple explanations of how to start using Maths Investigator components in the classroom, a bank of oral and mental starter activities, and curriculum matching charts. It also includes guidance on differentiation and assessment for learning, as well as how to develop problem solving, speaking and listening, and thinking skills effectively.
Brilliant value added this year because so many of my class have moved a whole level over the yearBest results we've ever had in maths - 99% L4 and above and a staggering number of L5s - all down to the MI approach. Six of the children in my bottom set moved from 3c to 4c during the year. Selection of comments from Richmond schools who used MI draft materials for MI3 and MI6 The children loved the whole idea of M and her spies. It made maths much more real for them as well as enjoyable. Thank you! We loved the idea. It really kept the children engaged and enthused. It was fun to teach the unit when you can see the children enjoying it. Selection of comments from pilot schools who trialled MI3 sample unit I thought it was great, super and brilliant. I like the characters as well. I think Maths Investigator lessons were a lot better than normal maths. It was 100% fantastic%. Selection of comments from children with whom MI3 sample unit was trialled
