Matteo Bandello wurde um 1485 in Castelnuovo Scrivia, Italien geboren und starb 1561(?) in Agen, Frankreich. Bandello war Mü¾¦˜¼nch, er war jedoch auch als Erzieher, Diplomat und Soldat tü¾†”¼tig. Zu seinen Vertrauten zü¾†”¼hlte erNiccolü¾Œ¦˜¼ Machiavelli. Infolge politischer Auseinandersetzungen in Mailand verlor er sein Vermü¾¦˜¼gen und muü¾™¦¼te nach Frankreich fliehen, wo er, zum Bischof ernannt, sein schriftstellerisches Werk fortsetzte. Bandello verfaü¾™¦¼te 214 Novellen nach dem VorbildGiovanni Boccaccios. Die ersten drei Bü¾†”¼nde erschienen 1554, ein vierter folgte 1573. Einige seiner Novellen dienten anderen Schriftstellern als literarische Vorlage, z.B.William Shakespearefü¾˜¶˜¼r einige seiner Stü¾˜¶˜¼cke. Die bekannteste und wichtigste Vorlage ist die Novelle ü¾˜¶˜¼ber den tragischen Tod zweier unglü¾˜¶˜¼cklicher Liebender, Romeo und Giulietta.
