Maya Monuments by Nigel Hughes

Maya Monuments is a record of 40 representative Maya buildings and sculpted monoliths, selected by the author to show the stylistic range of the Classic and Post-Classic periods of that remarkable and accomplished civilization. The book contains 41 illustrations by the author. The originals are large watercolors in the tradition of the 19th century topographical artists such as Lear in the Levant, Roberts in Egypt and Palestine, and the Daniells in India, and were exhibited to great acclaim at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico, and in New York. The narrative consists of 31 essays on the culture, economy, beliefs, and government of the Maya, with an emphasis on the time of their greatest artistic flowering.
