Written by two highly regarded writers both in academia and the popular press, the revision features interdisciplinary examples and exercises and provides coverage of special topics such as writing about literature, argumentation, business writing, and writing in-class essays. With the new edition comes an extensive new chapter on writing in the disciplines and expanded coverage of the research paper that includes sample papers in both MLA and APA formats. In addition, the first four chapters on the writing process now incorporate greater emphasis on the documented essay.

Richard Marius directed the Expository Writing Program at Harvard University for sixteen years, teaching students and creating the philosophy for the only course required of all Harvard undergraduates. That philosophy is embodied in this book. He is the author of three novels, biographies of Thomas More and Martin Luther, and several textbooks on writing including the McGRAW-HILL COLLEGE HANDBOOK which he wrote with Harvey Wiener. His articles have appeared in publications as diverse as the medieval journal, Tradition and the nonmedieval journal, Esquire. He reviews books for many periodicals, including The New York Times, and he writes a regular book review column for Harvard Magazine. He was one of the editors of The Yale Edition of the Complete Works of St. Thomas More, and with Keith Frome, he has edited the Columbia Anthology of Civil War Poetry. He now teaches English and Religious Studies at Harvard and is at work on a fourth novel and a large book on Martin Luther. In 1993 he was awarded the Harvard Foundation Medal for his contributions to minorities at Harvard. Harvey S. Wiener is currently affiliated with Marymount Manhattan College after serving as Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at Adelphi University. Previously University Dean for Academic Affairs, the City University of New York, he was founding president of the Council of Writing Program Administrators. Dr. Wiener is the author of many books on reading and writing for college students and their teachers, including The Writing Room (Oxford, 1981). He is co-author of The McGraw-Hill College Handbook, a reference grammar and rhetoric text. Dr. Wiener has chaired the Teaching of Writing Division of the Modern Language Association (1987). He has taught writing at every level of education from elementary school to graduate school. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Brooklyn College, he holds a Ph.D. in Renaissance literature. Dr. Wiener has won grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, and the Exxon Education Foundation.
