Mclevy: Servant of the Crown & the Picture of Innocence by David Ashton
This title presents two BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisations, starring Brian Cox as McLevy, Siobhan Redmond as Jean Brash and Michael Perceval-Maxwell as Mulholland. Inspired by the real-life memoirs of a Victorian Inspector in Scotland, James McLevy prowls the dark streets of 1860s Edinburgh bringing criminals to justice, with the assistance of Constable Mulholland. "Servant of the Crown" sees the Queen visiting Edinburgh. A royal procession down Princes Street is planned, but the recent Crimean War has stirred up extreme political feeling and she could be in grave danger. McLevy and Mulholland join Her Majesty's protection squad in a desperate hunt for a deadly assassin...In "The Picture of Innocence", a high court judge is dead and suspicion falls on his wife. Her alleged adultery with a fashionable portrait painter suggests a strong motive for murder, but she protests her innocence and turns to McLevy for help. Starring Brian Cox, Siobhan Redmond and Michael Perceval-Maxwell, it is written by David Ashton. "One of the best drama offerings on air". ("Financial Times").David Ashton was born in the Scottish town of Greenock in 1941. From 1964 to 1967, he attended Central Drama School in London. David began writing in 1984, and several of his plays and TV adaptations have been broadcast.
