Michaels is a senior fellow in environmental studies at the Cato Institute in Washington, DC, and a research professor of environmental sciences at the University of Virginia. He is also the state climatologist for Virginia. He received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Biological Sciences from the University of Chicago, and in 1979, he received his doctorate in Ecological Climatology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Michaels served as program chair for the American Meteorological Society's Committee on Applied Climatology and is a previous president of the American Association of State Climatologists. Dr. Michaels is the author of four books on climate change and its effects on ecosystems and economies, as well as hundreds of professional and popular articles. He received the American Library Association's finest government publications worldwide citation in 1994, and he was an author of the Association of American Geographers' Paper of the Year in Climate Science in 2003.
